One Guess…Name That Disease: (Answer at bottom)
Description: Highly contagious childhood illness caused by a respiratory virus. Vaccines are quite effective in preventing the disease, making this a rare condition in the US but more common worldwide.
Signs and Symptoms: Red, blotchy rash appears on the face and spreads to the chest and feet. Small bluish white spots may appear on the inside of the cheeks. Respiratory symptoms can include cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat.
Diagnosis: Based on clinical presentation and confirmed by laboratory tests.
Treatment: The standard 2-dose vaccine sequence is 97% effective at providing lifelong protection from the disease. Treatment for active infection includes supportive care with hydration and anti-inflammatories.
Prognosis: Associated with secondary complications such as ear infection, diarrhea, dehydration, pneumonia, encephalitis. Can be fatal with >100,000 deaths per year worldwide.

** Prime time for telehealth? Amazon is now offering its Prime members 24/7 on-demand virtual care nationwide for $99/year, following the recent acquisition of telehealth platform One Medical.
** Postpartum depression treatment won’t come cheap. The first pill approved to treat the 500,000 women affected per year by the condition will cost $15,900 for a two week course, raising questions about accessibility.
