🧘 NIH analysis reveals a significant rise in the use of complementary health approaches, especially for pain management (JAMA).  Researchers evaluated changes in the use of seven complementary health approaches including yoga, meditation, massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, naturopathy, and guided imagery/progressive muscle relaxation.  According to the authors, the percentage of individuals who reported using at least one of the seven approaches increased to 36.7% in 2022.  The use of yoga, meditation, and massage therapy experienced the most significant growth from 2002 to 2022.

⚰️ More states are considering bills allowing medically assisted death this year (Axios).  “Oregon became the first state to legalize medically assisted death in 1994. Since then, nine states and Washington, D.C., have passed similar laws…These bills typically allow people with six months or less to live to request prescriptions from a doctor that they can take at home if and when they decide to end their lives. Doctors can only prescribe the drugs to patients they deem mentally competent.” 19 additional states including Florida, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Virginia have legislation currently pending to pass such measures.

🏥 Parents struggle to get care after cyberattack on Chicago children’s hospital (NBC News).  Chicago’s biggest children’s hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s, was crippled by a cyberattack that disabled access to internet equipment and affected patient care.  “Ransomware hackers, often located in Russia, where they’re safe from extradition to other countries, frequently take over hospital networks and demand payment in cryptocurrency.”  More than 133 million patient records were breached in 2023, more than double from 2022.

❣️ “It’s a new era”: Weight loss treatments significantly lower blood pressure, studies find (CNN).  “One study showed a significant decrease in the blood pressure of people who received weekly injections of the drug tirzepatide; the other found that participants who underwent bariatric surgery had significantly improved blood pressure control after five years compared with those who only took blood pressure medications…Participants taking 5 milligrams of tirzepatide weekly had an average reduction in systolic blood pressure of 7.4 mmHg, those on 10 milligrams had an average reduction of 10.6 mmHg, and those on 15 milligrams had an average reduction of 8.0 mmHg.”
