ONE GUESS…NAME THAT DISEASE: 

• Highly contagious bacterial infection that may cause respiratory distress in babies but usually mild symptoms in adults.

• In the first week, it appears to be similar to a common cold.

• In the second stage, individuals may develop rapid, violent, and uncontrolled coughing fits and struggle to breath.  Coughing spells may end with a high-pitched sound when finally able to inhale after a coughing fit.  

• The coughing fits occur frequently at night, with an average of 15 attacks per 24 hours.  Individuals may feel very tired after a coughing fit, but well in between the fills.  

• Symptoms may last 6-10 weeks.  Also known as the 100-day cough.

• More than half of infants less than 1 year end up requiring hospitalization.  

• Vaccinated individuals can be affected, but usually less severe and shorter duration.

🏥 Cyberattacks on hospitals are likely to increase, putting lives at risk, experts warn (ABC News).  “The Department of Health and Human Services said it will rewrite the rules for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA)…to include new provisions that address cybersecurity later this year.  The department is also considering new cybersecurity requirements attached to hospitals’ Medicaid and Medicare funding.”

🥶 FDA approves first treatment for severe frostbite (CNN).  “Iloprost injection, marketed under the brand name Aurlumyn, is a vasodilator…that opens blood vessels and prevents blood clotting…Iloprost does not carry a risk of bleeding and can be used up to three days after the injury…It has been used to treat severe frostbite in other parts of the world – like Canada, Nepal and Europe – for years.”

💉 Ozempic, Mounjaro and hundreds of other drugs become even more expensive in 2024 (CNN). US drug prices saw a median increase of 4.7% in January 2024. The hike was spread across ~900 medications, including increasingly popular (and expensive) weight loss medications.

🏃 100 Minutes - the amount of exercise needed per week to lead to a significant reduction in depressive symptoms, according to a 10 year study published in JAMA.  “The findings suggest that accumulating as little as 100 minutes per week or 20 minutes per day for 5 days per week of moderate-intensity activity (eg, brisk walking; 4 METs) may be sufficient to significantly lower the risk of depressive symptoms and odds of major depression over time among older adults.”

😞 People who live alone are more depressed than those who don’t, survey suggests (Axios).  “16% of U.S. adults lived alone in 2021, and 6.4% of them reported depression, compared to 4.1% of those who live with others — for both men and women, across most race and Hispanic-origin groups and by family income, according to the CDC.”
