Rare disease that occurs with protein buildup in the organs. Can effect the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, nervous system, and GI tract.
70% of affected individuals are men.
36 different subtypes. Some types are hereditary. Other types are secondary to inflammatory disease or long term dialysis.
Symptoms are vague and may include fatigue, weight loss, swelling, numbness, bruising, increased tongue size, shortness of breath, bleeding.
Diagnosis confirmed by tissue biopsy.
Treatment may include chemotherapy, medications, stem cell transplant, organ transplant.

🧂 Swapping in a salt substitute may significantly lower risk of high blood pressure (NBC News). “Researchers found that cutting salt back by more than a third by swapping in another mineral supplement — salty-tasting potassium chloride — along with other flavorings, such as mushroom, seaweed and lemon, was protective against high blood pressure over a two-year period…Most Americans consume too much salt, about 3,500 milligrams a day, according to the American Heart Association. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration recommends that healthy adults consume less than 2,300 mg of sodium (about a teaspoon of salt) per day.”
