💊 Study suggests experimental drug could be alternative to opioids (ABC News). An experimental drug lowered acute pain in postoperative patients, paving the way for a novel non-opioid treatment that works by blocking signals in the peripheral nervous system. The drug manufacturer, Vertex, says they plan to apply for FDA approval later this year.
🏥 The US hasn’t seen syphilis numbers this high since 1950. Other STD rates are down or flat. (AP). Total syphilis cases surpassed 207,000 in 2022, a 17% increase. CDC officials don’t have a clear cause for the rise in cases, or the fall in other STD’s such as gonorrhea. There were 3,755 babies born with congenital syphilis in 2022, a 10-fold increase over the past decade.
👆 FDA renews debate over biased pulse oximeters (Axios). “There's growing evidence that the devices don't reliably detect low oxygen levels in Black patients, resulting in delayed care, missed diagnoses of hypoxemia and possibly worse outcomes…The COVID-19 crisis revealed how bias in the devices, which led to treatment delays for Black patients with the virus, could exacerbate disparities in the treatment of other conditions like COPD and emphysema.”
🧠 Elon Musk’s Neuralink implants brain tech in human patient for the first time (NBC News). The company announced it had successfully implanted its first brain device into a human patient. The device aims to help patients with severe paralysis control external technologies using only neural signals from their minds.
