  • Potassium sparing diuretic that targets the distal nephron.  Weaker than loop diuretics.

  • Used primarily to treat edema from heart failure, liver scarring, or kidney disease.  May also be used to treat hypertension.

  • Anti-androgen that decreases testosterone/estrogen levels and can be used to treat acne, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), and PCOS in women.

  • Most significant side effect is hyperkalemia.  Can also cause nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, decreased libido.  Can cause hypogonadism in males with prolonged use.

🦹 Cyberattack on insurance giant disrupting business for doctors, therapists (CNN).  “...the hacking incident ‘just puts a lot more burden on physician practices, hospitals, pharmacies that now are scrambling to figure out the alternatives of how to get claims submitted or fill prescriptions.’..It’s all part of the fallout from a cyberattack that a week ago hit Change Healthcare, a unit of health IT giant UnitedHealth that processes prescriptions to insurance for tens of thousands of pharmacies nationwide.”

😞 The rate of antidepressants prescribed to young people surged during the pandemic (NPR).  “...The monthly rate of antidepressants being dispensed to young people increased about 64% more quickly during the coronavirus pandemic…The increase was prominent among young women and girls. The monthly rate increased about 130% faster among 12- to 17-year-old girls, and about 57% faster among young women between the ages of 18 and 25.”

🏃Women need less exercise than men for same cardiovascular benefits, researchers find (CBS News).  “The researchers found that women needed just under 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity a week to get the same "survival benefit" that men get with five hours of physical activity. The mortality risk for women who engaged in regular physical activity was reduced by 24% compared to 15% for men, the researchers wrote in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.”  The new study's researchers suggested differences between the male and female bodies could be responsible for the divergent results between the men and women studied. They noted that men on average have proportionately larger hearts, wider lung airways, greater lung diffusion capacity and larger muscle fibers than women.
